Creating an Effective Workspace
Hey y’all and welcome back! Today I wanted to share a few tips that I have used in creating an effective workspace. I personally like to have a designated area to do my work when I’m at home. I feel like when I go into that space it allows me to focus on what I’m doing that day. Some people can work anywhere, the couch, the kitchen counter, a coffee shop. I however like to retreat to a space that is all my own, and where I can be alone with my thoughts without any distractions. Here are a few tips that I think are helpful when creating that type of workspace whether it be a home office or your office outside of the home.
Tips for creating an effective workspace:
Natural Light – I have had offices in the past when I worked in the professional setting that haven’t had any windows or natural light, and I can automatically tell you that it made me very depressed. That is why I have put that as number 1 on my list. It’s important to be able to see outside when you’re working. Even though you are indoors and working it still gives you a view of the outdoors which helps your overall mood.
Lighting – If you don’t have a ton of natural light near your workspace make sure you have ample light. I’m not a huge fan of overhead fluorescent lighting either. So if you have no other choice than fluorescent lighting at your office, bring in a nice lamp to your space to give it some warmth and ambiance. It will automatically change the feel of the room.
Comfortable chair – This one is definitely near the top because you want to be comfortable when you are sitting for long hours. It helps with posture and overall mood when you’re sitting in a comfortable chair. Chairs can be an investment but in the long run it is sooo worth it! Your backs and bums will thank you later.
Organization – Being in an organized space is always on my list when creating an effective workspace. If I’m at a messy desk I won’t be inspired to work. I have to have everything in it’s place to really focus on the task at hand. Before you start a project just take a quick moment to create a clean and orderly desk before you get started. It will really set the tone for the project and you won’t be distracted by clutter. Clutter gives me feelings of anxiety which you do not want when trying focusing on the task at hand. This catch all is a great way to keep all your small items organized.
Diffusing oils – This is actually a new one for me. If your job allows you to have a diffuser at your desk I highly recommend it! There is something about that sensory experience that makes me feel good in my space. I like to diffuse a stress relief blend or a breath blend when I’m working at my desk. It creates a nice vibe and space to work in. It will also help when someone decides to microwave fish while at work. 🙂 p.s. NEVER DO THIS!!!! Everyone will hate you! It’s equivalent to burning popcorn.
Music – I like to have a little quiet music in the background when I’m working. It keeps me inspired and in a good mood when I have tunes on that I love. It helps set the pace so don’t turn on any smooth jazz or you may just fall asleep at your desk. I typically turn on a Pandora station or Amazon music instead of the radio with a ton of commercials. I like to play it on another speaker for better quality sound. I really love my Jambox by Jawbone speaker. I’ve had it for years and it still sounds good.
Flowers or a plant -These are ornamental but I think having something pretty to look at on your desk can be very inspiring especially if it’s alive. If you aren’t that great at keeping plants alive like me, then a nice faux plant would do just fine. You want your space to be a place you like being in. Making it appealing and surrounding it with things you love and embody you is very important. It gives you a sense of comfort and in turn you will then be a productive worker.
I hope that these few tips will help you when you’re setting up your work space.
