Basement Renovation Reveal
Hey friends and happy Tuesday! This is going to be one heck of a Transformation Tuesday since we finally have our basement renovation complete and can show it off to you guys! I will be doing a series of blogs over the next couple days since it’s a lot of content to cover being that it is one whole floor of our home.
Before
If you’d like to check out some previous posts about our basement, and to see what it looked like prior to our reno, you can check out these blogs below I posted last Summer.
Here is just a snippet of what it looked like last June.
Without further adieu let’s just get to it shall we? Grab your favorite beverage and a snack because it’s a long one y’all! “I’m with you till the end of the line”. Get it?!!
The Reveal!
Living Room
One of the biggest changes we made was to hang a TV in this built in space. Before, we just had a smaller TV that barely fit this space. I want to make it known right here, right now that I, Robyn Davis, was the one who told Chris he needed a larger TV. This man deserves the world. He really does!
Before we started any work on the basement I sat down with Chris and took down his wish list of items that he wanted to have done, and we worked off of that list of priorities. Here’s a short version of our original wish list:
New flooring throughout, new paint on walls and trim, backsplash for kitchen, sofa, TV stand, chairs, new bed, shelving for hallway, cabinet for coffee bar beside kitchen and additional storage, prints of Captain America on either side of shield and a barn door. No problem! Let the fun begin! Here’s a little mood board I put together for a little inspiration before we started the work. Looking back on it it’s pretty spot on!
Office
Chris’ home office is down here in the basement, so he does spend the majority of his time down here when he’s working from home. I am so glad that he now has a wonderful and bright place to work in everyday. He tells me everyday how much he loves it! That makes me so happy!
We will eventually be replacing his desk with something custom made which I’m so excited for y’all to see. Stay tuned for that!
Flooring
The first major step was new flooring. We chose a laminate floor in the color “frosted coffee”. I will share more details over the next few blogs on the whole process. There were definitely some hiccups during this flooring process that we will share, but overall it came out really nice. They are mainly gray toned with a small amount of brown to tie in the carpeting we had on the stairs.
Wall Color
The wall color we chose is White Cotton by Sherwin Williams HGSW4027. It’s got a twinge of gray in it because we didn’t want a super stark white. Before, the basement had at least 3 different colors of paint on the walls, and some of the doors never matched. So it was nice to see it all one cohesive color with a fresh coat of paint on the trim and doors. We also switched out our warm lights with LED bulbs and that made a huuuuuge difference down there. It’s like daylight now which I love!
Kitchen
The backsplash we chose was from Lowe’s. It’s a ceramic mosaic subway tile by American Olean that we finished with a gray grout. I love how much it has brightened up this kitchen. That’s really the only thing we did to the kitchen area. The cabinets and butcher block counter top were in excellent condition, so there was no need to update those. It’s amazing what a little tile can do to a space!
Barn Door
We had our barn door custom built by a local vendor. This bedroom never had a door so we couldn’t really classify this space as a bedroom, but now we can! Hello added value! It definitely makes such a huge impact! And now our guests will have some privacy.
Shelves
I hung some floating shelves here, but honestly they were more sagging than floating. So we picked out some basic black brackets to put underneath to carry the load. These shelves were from Hobby Lobby, and I stained them to match our barn door.
Furniture
Now the fun part! Furniture! For the most part we sold all of our old furniture down here. I’m going to do a dedicated blog on all the furnishings to give y’all all the details and sources of where we bought our furniture and decor.
We had almost began to lose hope that we would receive these leather chairs we ordered back in April. Low in behold we finally received them yesterday. So Chris quickly put them together just so I could finally photograph the space and write this blog. Nothing like down to the wire. I work better under pressure. They were definitely worth the wait and were exactly what this space needed!
Sunny D. seems to approve of them too! What…you didn’t think little man was going to make an appearance? He can’t help himself!
This light gray sofa really helped to brighten it up down here. Can you believe that Chris approved of all these throw pillows y’all! He picked them out! I just showed him how to do the karate chop down the middle. He’s got great taste! I mean after all, he did pick me.
The hammered coffee table was one of those items that we searched and searched for. I can’t tell you how many places we looked, but ended up finding it online. It’s great because you can store extra pillows or throws in it as well!
Chris wanted a modern farmhouse feel down here. He also wanted to pepper in some of his favorite Captain America pieces as well without it being a theme overload. We framed two of his favorite Captain America quotes and hung on either side of this Captain America shield. I love the detail on these frames!
Giant Letterboard
I also created this large letter board feature with a favorite quote from the MCU movies. You can read the full tutorial on how I made the giant letter board here. This was such a fun DIY and Chris already has some other quotes he wants to use on it! I can’t wait to see what he changes it to!
Coffee Bar
One of my favorite furniture pieces is this wardrobe cabinet we found at a local furniture store. It was on clearance for such a steal, and it measured to be perfect for this space we had next to the kitchen. We use it for a coffee bar and a place to hide the microwave. Chris has even outfitted it with his own favorite Rae Dunn mugs! I also really like the red Keurig he picked out!
Bedroom
The bedroom got a quick update with a new bed. We had been using an old headboard that I had since college, so I thought it was due time for an upgrade. We found this simple metal one on Overstock. It definitely gives the bedroom that farmhouse feel now. That hearth and hand pillow lumbar pillow on the bed I found at a local bargain store that buys out Target’s old stock. I was one happy gal when I saw it! I scooped it up so quick y’all!
We kept it pretty neutral in here. One of my favorite features is this little TV stand that I repainted using the Fusion Mineral Paint in Soapstone. You can read that tutorial here. I just love how it turned out! It’s such a nice shade of gray with a slight bluish undertone that matched perfectly with our existing rug.
I love the simplicity of this room. The black, white, and gray tones give it a calming and welcoming feeling. Heck…I’d want to stay down here!
In the bathroom we just added our Hobby Lobby shelf above the toilet down here for some added storage since it’s a very small and minimal bathroom. A new shower curtain made a huge difference too. I also switched out the lighting with LED bulbs so it’s much brighter. This mirror is perfect for tweezing eyebrows y’all. It may even be better than a car mirror. Ladies you know what I’m talking about. It’s a truth mirror that’s for sure! You can see EVERY LITTLE PORE and whisker..lol!
We added a few different decor features down the hallway so it wouldn’t be so bare and stark looking. I’ve always loved these metal letters, and so Chris picked out his favorite word to feature.

I love what you did and everything looks just gorgeous. We decided to go with the same color for our basement and similar flooring. Question is did you decide to do the soffit the wall or the ceiling color or a combination? We are currently trying to make that decision

For the trim we used pure white by Sherwin Williams.
