Choosing the Right Carpet
Hey friend and welcome back! When we moved into our home over three years ago I was never really thrilled with the existing carpet we had in our living room. It was just a standard builder grade color with not a whole lot of character. Over the years I just decided to embrace it, and then I even just put an area rug over top of it just to give the space some interest and pattern. So when Phenix Flooring reached out to me to collaborate on a project with their brand NEW Modern Contours carpet collection, I was beyond ecstatic! Choosing the right carpet for you home can be tricky, so I’ve compiled a few simple tips to help you with that process.
Here’s a look at our living room before the new carpet installation.
The first step was seeing all of our different options within the Modern Contours Collection by Phenix Flooring. We visited a local carpet store, Flacks Flooring, in Cumming Georgia who sells Phenix Flooring. I think one of the best features about this line is that it has a lifetime protection of Microban antimicrobial technology. What is Microban technology you ask? Surfaces with Microban technology remain 99% cleaner from bacteria and odors than untreated surfaces. You will find it commonly used in a lot of household items, clothing, medical equipment, and even military gear.
There are three curated and coordinated palettes in the Modern Contours collection, so it was a bit difficult choosing because they are all so beautiful! “Savile Row recalls the timeless craftsmanship of London’s custom suiting: crisply tailored patterns offer refined textures and a sophisticated look and feel.” This palette is definitely for your modern spaces.
“Champs Elysees is inspired by the luxurious detail of Parisian fashion. Its intricate designs and touches of metallic yarn provide lush, high-end appeal.”
“Bryant Park is drawing on the contemporary-chic vibe of New York style: subtle gradations of color create movement and give vibrant dimension.” My eye was immediately drawn to this collection. I loved the natural vibe of this palette, and it was perfect for my style.
There was something about the Sartorial MC105 style in the color “112 Clever” that I was just drawn to. It’s a part of the Bryant Park collection. I told the salesperson it reminded me of birch trees. I just really fell in love with the natural textured design it offered. It also coordinated really well with our sofa color. As you can see below they have a wide variety of color options with each design that you can choose from as well.
Tips for Choosing the Right Carpet for Your Home
Tip #1 Bring Your Swatches
One thing that I highly recommend when shopping for carpet is to bring your paint swatches, furniture cushions or pillows in order to match and coordinate your space. As you can see below, we matched our sofa cushion slip cover and our wall color to see the full color palette. Our living room has a lot of warm tones, so I wanted to be sure not to choose something too cool toned.
Tip # 2 Pick Your Pile
There are a few different styles when it comes to carpet pile, which is the surface you see on carpet that are created from yarn tufts that are either folded over into loops, cut straight across or both. The style that I chose has a combination of both loops and cuts. That’s what gives it such amazing texture and dimension.
A few weeks after our visit to Flack’s Flooring it was installation day! I was so excited to see how this room was going to completely transform. I posted a full IGTV time-lapse video of the whole installation and styling process over on my Instagram. I find it so fascinating and gratifying at the same time to watch how a space transforms on high speed. Can you believe it! I’m absolutely in love with the way it turned out!
Tip #3 Choose the Direction of Your Flooring
As you can see our living room is sectioned off from the rest of the flooring on our main floor, so we wanted to be sure that the pattern of the carpet ran in the same direction of our hardwood flooring. That way you eye is drawn in the same direction. If you have a large narrow space be sure to run your pattern lengthwise to give the illusion that the space is larger.
I placed my birch tree logs in a lantern on our hearth to play off the pattern of the carpet. When I showed my mom a sneak peek on FaceTime the first thing she said was “It looks like birch trees!”. How funny is that? I’m so her daughter! I said that same thing when I was in the store picking it out.
You may find this a little strange, but I love the smell of new carpet! I think for me it’s a nostalgic smell. My parents had new carpet installed back when I was in 8th grade. I remember coming home from a Halloween party at my friend’s house, and as soon as I walked in I smelled the new carpet. It’s amazing how different scents can totally transport you back to a certain place and time in your life.
This new carpeting just heightens the look I was trying to achieve for so long in this space, and it really helped to bring the whole design together. I love how sophisticated and high end it looks now. Not to mention so super soft on your tootsies! This line is made with SureSoftSD fiber that keeps it feeling super comfortable underfoot. The night after it was installed my husband walked on it with his bare feet for the first time and was like, “This feels so amazing on your feet!”
I love how much brighter our living room looks now. Thank you so much to Phenix Flooring for collaborating with me on this project. I am curious if you are still happy with the Phenix carpet you chose? I am contemplating getting the same one.

We loved our Phenix carpet choice. We have since moved from that house so we didn’t have time to enjoy it long term. I thought it was a nice neutral but offerred some interest with it’s pattern!
