What We Planted in our Garden
I’m finally getting around to sharing what we planted in our garden this year. This is our first go round with a raised garden so we were bound to make a few mistakes. I took a look back and it looks like we had everything in the beds by June 5th this year. A month later and everything is looking very happy!
To see what we used as far as soil layers you can refer to my past blog all about these rolling raised garden beds. Looking back I probably would have kept my herbs in their own container as well as the strawberries. They are kind of getting lost underneath the squash but aren’t showing any signs of distress. They are just a bit more difficult to get to. You can see the rosemary peeking out next to the squash.
The squash and zucchini definitely need their own container. Next year we will most likely put those in their own larger bed. Before planting I suggest searching what can be planted together for companions. We did this ahead of time just to be sure everyone would be happy with one another.
Here’s what we planted in each bed:
Raised Bed 1: June vs July
1 roma tomato
1 lemon boy tomato2 sweet peppers
2 red peppers
2 yellow peppers1 green pepper
1 Basil4 marigolds (1 on each corner)
Raised Bed 2: June vs July
4 cucumbers
2 zucchini
1 butternut squash
2 yellow squash3 Strawberries
1 Rosemary
1 Dill
4 Marigolds (1 on each corner)
Marigolds are not only colorful additions to landscaping, but they have a distinctive smell that repels mosquitoes and other garden pests, including squash bugs and tomato worms. Marigolds contain a natural compound used in many insect repellents.
2 Smaller Containers in front of Fruit Containers:
6 sweet potatoes (3 in each container)
For the 3 Tall Containers with Trellises in the middle of the rolling beds we planted blueberry, muscadine grapes, and a blackberry without thorns.
We also have this same trio of fruit planted in ground as well back behind the gym near our fig trees. Long story short I ordered from a company here in South Carolina and the boxes got diverted all across the country even though they were shipped from only an hour away from our home. So the company sent a new batch to replace those. In the end the well traveled plants finally were delivered so we ended up with 6 plants altogether.
We did spray some neem oil on a few of the plants that we noticed that had some pests eating their leaves. It has seemed to help.
All in all it is coming together and I can’t wait to harvest some veg this season!
Container gardening is so fun and very rewarding. It’s funny, Kato sees us checking the beds each day so as soon as he goes out in the morning he feels like he has to do a perimiter check and make sure all the plants are doing ok.
Thanks for flying by friend!
xoxo,
Robyn

We haven’t yet. I do think the combination of the soils we used has helped tremendously. Especially the compost.
